International Admissions

Citizens from other countries are admitted to the school on exactly the same basis as citizens of the United States. Tuition for international students is the same as for citizens of the United States.

All application materials must be submitted in English.

NOTE: S-TESL admissions requires an official sealed transcript (a list of grades for all classes taken) from your university in English. An official and sealed diploma, or degree certificate, will not suffice. S-TESL will only accept an official and sealed transcript as proof of degree.

English Proficiency

All international students, with the exception of those who have completed their degree at an English-speaking university, must demonstrate English proficiency by:

  • submitting the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). International applicants need to score at least 580 on the paper-based exam, a 237 on the computer-based exam or 92 on the internet-based exam to be admitted to S-TESL. Some allowance for lower scores may be given, with approval from the S-TESL Director.
  • or
  • completing the S-TESL Reading/Writing proficiency test, with approval from the S-TESL Director.
Also see Reading/writing proficiency test, below.

I-20: New and Transfer

Before S-TESL's admissions department can begin I-20 processing, students must meet the English proficiency requirements, and degree requirements, outlined above.

International students must study full time (9 credits per quarter) in order to qualify for an I-20 document.

Before registration, students requesting an I-20 must email Admissions Director, Kim Darcy at hasegawa@spu.edu.

The email must contain the following information:

  • Student's full legal name
  • Name and city of university where degree was obtained.
  • results of standardized English test score (TOEFL)(if applicable)
  • name of current school holding your I-20 (if you plan to apply for a transfer)

Documentation of Degree Note:

For students who obtained their degree from a non-US institution, it is sometimes beneficial to begin the documentation process well in advance of program completion. Processes to obtain official document ion from international universities is highly variable and can be very lengthy, especially if official translation is required.

If you obtained your degree from a non-US institution, including institutions in Canada or Mexico, you are strongly encouraged to contact Admissions Director, Kim Darcy prior to completion of certificate requirements. Kim Darcy will access your situation and discuss your specific document requirements. Delays in the issuing of certificates can result if your situation is not accessed prior to graduation.

To assist Kim Darcy in keeping a record of your individual situation all correspondence regarding documentation should be via email only.
